Wooden Photo Frames: How to Choose the Right Finish
Natural Oak, Walnut, Gallery White or Matte Black: which finish suits which photo, which room and which wall, plus when to add a white margin.
Wooden photo frames suit Indian homes because they sit comfortably with the furniture most of us already own. The decision that matters is the finish. We make our custom photo frames in four: Natural Oak, Walnut, Gallery White and Matte Black, each printed with your photo and delivered ready to hang.
That last part is worth saying plainly. We do not sell empty frames. You upload a photo, we print it and set it inside the frame, and what arrives is one finished piece with the hook already fitted. So choosing a finish is really choosing how your photo will look on your wall, next to your sofa, under your light.
Why wooden frames suit most Indian rooms
Wood reads as furniture. A thin metal frame can look sharp in an office, and a plastic frame tends to look like a temporary fix. A wooden frame fits a room with a teak dining table, a cane chair or a wooden TV unit without shouting about itself, which leaves the photo as the thing people notice.
The four finishes cover very different rooms, from a Chennai flat full of inherited rosewood furniture to a new Gurugram apartment in white and grey. Each one has photos and rooms it suits better than the others.
Natural Oak for everyday family photos
Natural Oak is the lightest of our wooden finishes, a warm honey tone. It is the one we suggest when someone cannot decide, because it looks at home beside older sheesham pieces and newer light laminate alike. It suits colour photos full of skin tones and greenery: a family picnic, a child on the first day of school, grandparents on a garden swing.
Where it struggles: a very pale photo on a pale wall. A beach shot in soft light, framed in Natural Oak against a cream wall, can blur into one beige patch. Walnut or Matte Black gives that photo a clearer edge.
Walnut for wedding portraits and old photos
Walnut is a deep brown finish with a classic feel, close to the frames many of our parents had in their drawing rooms. It flatters wedding photos full of reds and golds, and it gives an old scanned print from the 1980s a setting that feels true to its era. Walnut looks best against cream, beige or pastel walls.
On a dark accent wall, a Walnut frame can vanish. If your feature wall is navy or deep green, choose Gallery White or Natural Oak so the frame still reads as a frame.
White photo frames for light, modern rooms
Gallery White is a soft off-white rather than a stark, clinical white. It is the finish for newer flats with white or light grey walls, modular furniture and plenty of daylight. It makes baby photos, beach holidays and bright candids look fresh, and it pairs beautifully with a white margin inside the frame for a clean, gallery look.
The trade-off is upkeep. A white photo frame shows dust and fingerprints sooner than a darker one, so it is happier on a wall than on a side table where it gets picked up every day.
Black photo frames for contrast
Matte Black is the boldest of the four. It frames black-and-white photos better than anything else, and it gives strong colour photos, a sunset over the Arabian Sea or a lane in Jaipur at dusk, a sharp outline. Black photo frames suit modern interiors with metal, grey and white, and a row of them along a corridor looks deliberate and calm.
In a small, dim room, a large black frame can feel heavy. Keep black frames to 12x18 inches or less in a compact bedroom, or pick Natural Oak there instead.
Matching the finish to the room first
When the photo and the room pull in different directions, let the room decide. The frame lives with the furniture every day, and you can nearly always find a photo that suits a finish. A quick way to choose:
- Dark wooden furniture and cream walls: Walnut.
- Mixed furniture, or a room you plan to redo soon: Natural Oak.
- White walls, light floors and modular furniture: Gallery White.
- Grey or white walls with black accents, or any black-and-white photo: Matte Black.
Light changes the answer more than people expect. Under warm yellow LED bulbs, which many homes use in the evening, Walnut turns richer and darker while Gallery White picks up a cream tint. Under cool white tube lights, Natural Oak looks paler and Matte Black looks sharper. If the frame is going into a room you mostly use at night, look at the wall under those lights before deciding, and hold a sample of each colour, even a piece of card, against it.
If several frames will hang together, keep them in one finish, or two that sit close in tone, such as Walnut with Natural Oak. Mixing all four on one wall rarely works. Our gallery wall guide covers spacing and layout for groups of frames.
Margin or no margin
Every frame comes with a second choice: a white margin around the photo, or the photo running right up to the frame. Our margin is a real physical border set inside the frame, not a white edge printed onto the photo. It suits portraits, wedding photos and black-and-white prints, giving them room to breathe. No margin suits busy group photos and wide landscapes where you want every part of the picture. A margin inside Gallery White makes a soft all-white look; inside Matte Black it gives a crisp, formal contrast.
Sizes, prices and how each frame is made
Our wooden photo frames come in sizes from 8x8 to 54x54 inches, in square, portrait, landscape and panoramic shapes, and start at ₹1,022. The finish does not change the printing: your photo is printed at 2400 x 1200 DPI with fade-resistant pigment inks that last over 100 years, then set inside the frame. For help with size, our photo frame sizes guide has room-by-room suggestions, and our photo frame price guide explains what moves the cost up or down.
Before you order, you can see your framed photo at its real size on your own wall in 3D and AR, which is the easiest way to settle a tie between two finishes. A person on our team checks your photo before it prints and the finished frame before it leaves. We dispatch in 3 to 5 days, with priority dispatch available, free shipping over ₹199 and Cash on Delivery across India.
Looking after a wooden frame
Wooden frames ask for very little. Dust them with a soft dry cloth every few weeks, and skip wet wipes and cleaning sprays, which can dull the finish over time. Keep frames off walls that stay damp through the monsoon, such as a wall shared with a bathroom, and away from spots that take hours of direct afternoon sun. In humid coastal cities like Mumbai, Kochi or Chennai, an inner wall is the safer home through the rainy months.
Choosing a finish for a gift
If the frame is a present, choose for the recipient's home, not yours. Natural Oak is the safe pick when you have never seen their walls. Our photo frame gift ideas go through which photo suits which person, and for large group photos our guide to family photo frame ideas helps with size and layout.
