Birthday Gift for Mom: Useful, Personal and Made from Her Own Photos

A good birthday gift for mom is often a collage made entirely of photos of her, because she is the one holding the camera at every birthday, wedding and trip. Look through any family's phones and you will find hundreds of photos she took and only a handful she appears in. Printing those few is a gift she will not see coming.

The usual birthday list for mothers leans practical: a new pressure cooker, a saree, a spa voucher. Useful, yes. But the gift she shows to every visitor is the one with her own face in it, and it earns its place on the wall every single day.

A collage of her, for once

A collage of her life looks thoughtful when the arrangement has a quiet logic to it. Put the strongest photo in the largest cell, usually the wedding photo or the one where she is laughing. Keep the oldest photos at the top left and the newest at the bottom right, so the eye moves through the years the way it reads a page. Faces looking toward the centre hold a collage together; a face looking out of the edge pulls attention away.

Mixing black-and-white and colour works if it follows time: the early photos in black and white, the later ones in colour. Mixing at random looks like a mistake. And leave out any photo she has ever said she dislikes. You know which one.

A few words to go with it
